For months, Apple’s first foldable phone has been discussed under names such as iPhone Ultra and iPhone Fold. Just hours before Apple’s September event, a new report points to something much more revealing: iPhone Duo.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple has settled on iPhone Duo for its first folding iPhone, with pricing expected to start at about US$2,000 for 256GB. The timing matters. Apple has not officially announced the device or its retail name yet, so these details should still be treated as pre-event reporting rather than confirmed specifications.
Why “Duo” may tell us more than “Ultra”
The interesting part is not simply the name change. “Ultra” would have positioned the phone as a more expensive version of the conventional iPhone. “Duo” instead describes what makes this device different: two displays and two ways of using an iPhone.
That distinction could be important to Apple’s pitch. Rather than asking buyers to pay around $2,000 merely for a premium iPhone, Apple can present the Duo as a new category that shifts between phone and tablet-style use.
The reported price is aggressive — by foldable standards
A US$2,000 entry price is enormous for a smartphone, but it is notable because earlier expectations had placed Apple’s foldable even higher. Current reporting says the 256GB model could begin at $2,000, while configurations with substantially more storage could approach $3,000.
For Australian buyers, Apple has not announced local pricing, so direct currency conversions would be misleading once GST and Apple’s regional pricing are considered. The safer conclusion is simple: if the report is accurate, this will sit at the very top of Apple’s iPhone range.
October could make the Duo feel like a second Apple launch
The iPhone Duo is also reportedly set to reach customers as early as October, rather than shipping alongside Apple’s September iPhones. White and dark blue are reportedly among the planned colours.
That staggered timing could give Apple two waves of attention: the conventional Pro launch first, followed by the company’s first foldable weeks later. It may also reflect the manufacturing complexity of producing an entirely new form factor at scale.
The bigger story is what Apple does with the extra screen
Hardware alone will not determine whether Apple can turn foldables from a niche into a mainstream premium category. Reports suggest the Duo could run iPhone apps side by side, offer more iPad-like multitasking and support Apple Pencil.
If those features make the final product, the strongest reason to buy the Duo may not be that it folds. It may be that Apple finally has an iPhone capable of changing its interface and workflow when opened into a larger canvas.
What to watch at Apple’s event
The key questions are now unusually specific: Is iPhone Duo really the final name? Does Apple hold the starting price to around US$2,000? How much multitasking will iOS allow on the inner display? And can Apple explain why someone should choose its first-generation foldable over mature rivals from Samsung and Google?
We should get those answers very soon. Until Apple takes the stage, the name, price, colours and October availability remain reported details rather than official announcements. But if Gurman’s information holds, Apple’s biggest iPhone surprise may already have a name — and it is not Ultra.
