Apple has finally made a foldable iPhone — and it is not treating the iPhone Duo like an experiment.

Unveiled at Apple’s September 9 event, the iPhone Duo is the company’s first foldable iPhone and arguably its biggest change to the iPhone form factor in years. In Australia, it will start at A$3,499, with pre-orders opening at 10:00 pm AEST on October 16 and availability beginning October 23.

That price immediately puts the Duo in rarefied territory. But Apple is pitching the device as more than an iPhone that folds: it combines a pocketable outer screen with a tablet-like inner display, new multitasking features in iOS 27, Apple Pencil support and the same A20 Pro silicon used in the iPhone 18 Pro line.

What exactly is the iPhone Duo?

Closed, the Duo has a 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR outer display. Open it and you get a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR folding display — the largest display Apple has put on an iPhone. Both screens support ProMotion and Always-On display technology, while the inner panel uses a nano-texture finish designed to reduce reflections and make the crease less noticeable.

Apple says the Duo is its thinnest iPhone when opened. The body uses grade 5 titanium, while a precision hinge made from more than 100 components supports the folding display. Apple has also given it an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance.

Australian pricing is where things get serious

The iPhone Duo starts at A$3,499 for 256GB. The 512GB model costs A$3,899, 1TB jumps to A$4,699, and the top 2TB version reaches an extraordinary A$5,899.

It comes in two colours: Star White and Night Sky.

For many Australians, that makes the purchasing decision very different from a normal iPhone upgrade. The real question is whether the extra screen and new form factor can replace enough of what people currently use an iPad or small tablet for to justify the premium.

A20 Pro, dual batteries and Apple’s own modem

Inside is Apple’s new A20 Pro chip, paired with a vapor chamber designed to sustain performance during gaming, multitasking and AI workloads. Apple says the chip uses a 6-core CPU, 7-core GPU and dual 16-core Neural Engine.

The Duo also uses Apple’s C2 cellular modem and an N1 wireless chip supporting Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread.

Because a foldable has two halves, Apple has placed a battery on each side. The company rates the Duo for up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display or 44 hours using the outer display. Fast charging can take the battery to around 50 percent in about 20 minutes with a compatible wired charger.

iOS 27 is built around the folding screen

This may ultimately matter more than the hinge. Apple has adapted iOS 27 specifically for the Duo rather than simply stretching ordinary iPhone apps across a larger panel.

Split View lets two apps run side by side on an iPhone for the first time, and users can save app pairs for quick access. Apple says apps including Netflix, Zoom and Slack are already taking advantage of the larger display. Apple Pencil support is also coming later this year.

The Duo will ship with iOS 27.1.

The cameras use the fold itself

The rear system combines a 48MP Fusion Main camera and 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide. The folding design creates some genuinely different shooting options: users can frame themselves using the outer screen while taking a higher-quality selfie with the rear cameras, while Duo Preview can show the person being photographed a live preview.

There is also a 12MP Center Stage front camera and an under-display FaceTime camera on the inner screen.

Why the iPhone Duo matters beyond Apple

Samsung, Huawei and other manufacturers have spent years refining foldable phones, while the category has remained relatively small compared with conventional smartphones. Apple arriving now changes the equation.

The important part is not simply that Apple made a folding phone. It is that the company is trying to make the larger display central to everyday tasks — multitasking, video, productivity, gaming and even Apple Pencil input — rather than treating folding as the feature by itself.

That could bring considerably more mainstream attention to foldables. It will also put pressure on rivals to compete not only on thinness and hinge engineering, but on software designed specifically for two-screen and large-screen use.

Should Australians buy it?

At A$3,499, the iPhone Duo is clearly not the default iPhone for most buyers. First-generation hardware also deserves some caution: long-term hinge and folding-display durability can only really be judged after devices have spent months in consumers’ hands.

But the Duo is far more interesting than a routine annual specification upgrade. It gives iPhone users a genuinely different form factor, a much larger working area and new ways of using iOS without carrying a separate tablet.

For early adopters who already wanted an Apple foldable, this is the device they have been waiting for. Everyone else may want to see whether that 7.6-inch display changes daily use enough to justify a price that can climb all the way to A$5,899.
