Apple has finally entered the foldable phone market — and it has done it with a device that looks less like an experiment and more like a new branch of the iPhone family. The iPhone Duo is official, bringing two displays, Apple’s A20 Pro chip and a reworked iOS 27 experience designed around a phone that can genuinely change shape.
For Apple, this is bigger than another annual iPhone refresh. It is the first fundamental change to the physical format of the iPhone in years, and Apple is asking a flagship price for the privilege: US$1,999 for the 256GB model.
iPhone Duo price and release date
Apple says iPhone Duo will be offered in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB capacities, in two colours: Star White and Night Sky. Pre-orders open on Friday, October 16, with the phone arriving in stores and reaching customers on Friday, October 23.
Australia is included in the first launch wave. Apple’s Australian site lists pre-orders from 11:00 pm AEDT on October 16 and availability from October 23. At publication time, we are not inserting a converted Australian price in place of an official local RRP; regional Apple pricing does not simply follow the exchange rate.
The biggest iPhone screen yet — when you want it
Closed, the Duo has a 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR outer display intended to work like a compact conventional iPhone. Open it and the device reveals a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR folding display — 50 per cent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max display, according to Apple.
Both displays support ProMotion, Always-On functionality and up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness. The inner screen uses a nano-texture finish designed to reduce reflections and make the crease less visually distracting. Apple says the Duo will also gain support for the USB-C Apple Pencil later this year.
A20 Pro, vapour cooling and two batteries
Inside is the same A20 Pro family used by Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro models, but the foldable form factor has forced some interesting engineering. Apple has paired the chip with a custom vapour chamber and placed a high-energy battery on each side of the device.
Apple claims up to 31 hours of video playback using the inner display or up to 44 hours using the outer display. Fast charging can take the battery to around 50 per cent in roughly 20 minutes with a compatible wired setup.
The cameras use the fold instead of ignoring it
The rear camera system combines a 48MP Fusion Main camera with a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide. The Main camera provides an optical-quality 2x option, while the Ultra Wide handles wider perspectives and macro photography. There is also a 12MP Center Stage front camera and a separate under-display FaceTime camera on the inner screen.
More interesting are the features that depend on having two displays. Duo Preview can show the person being photographed a live preview on the outer screen, while the rear cameras can be used for higher-quality selfies. Smart Take uses on-device processing to automatically capture a shot when subjects are posing, and Kid Cue can show animations on the outer display to encourage children to look towards the camera.
iOS 27 may be the real test of the iPhone Duo
Foldable hardware is no longer novel by itself. Samsung, Google and several Chinese manufacturers have spent years refining the category. Apple therefore has to demonstrate why folding an iPhone makes the software meaningfully better.
Its answer is a version of iOS 27 tailored to the Duo. Open the device and Split View can run two apps side by side. Two windows from the same app can also be opened — useful for comparing Safari pages — and users can save app pairs for quick access. Apple has redesigned parts of the interface so controls, the status area and Dynamic Island make better use of the wider canvas.
Apple says Netflix, Zoom and Slack are among the third-party apps already adapting to the folding design. That developer response will matter enormously. A large screen is impressive in a demonstration; a large screen that changes how people actually use their phone is what could make the Duo important.
Apple is taking durability seriously
The Duo uses a Grade 5 titanium frame and hinge cover, Ceramic Shield protection and an inner display with a scratch-resistant coating. Apple says the hinge contains more than 100 components and the phone carries an IP68 water- and dust-resistance rating.
Touch ID is built into the side button rather than relying solely on Face ID, and the phone is eSIM-only worldwide. Apple’s N1 wireless chip brings Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread, while its C2 modem handles cellular connectivity.
Why the iPhone Duo matters
The headline feature is obviously the fold. The more consequential question is whether Apple can make foldables feel less like a specialist category and more like an obvious premium-phone choice.
At US$1,999, the Duo is not going to replace the mainstream iPhone overnight. But Apple is giving buyers something its Pro phones cannot: a pocketable iPhone that can become a 7.6-inch multitasking screen on demand. If the hinge, inner display and software hold up outside controlled demos, the Duo could do for foldables what Apple has repeatedly done in other mature categories — arrive late, then dramatically expand the audience.
