Apple’s first foldable may have stolen the spotlight, but the iPhone 18 Pro is the phone that will define Apple’s mainstream flagship line for the next year. And this time, the Pro upgrade is about more than a faster chip.
Apple has officially unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max with a new variable-aperture 48MP Fusion Main camera, the 2-nanometre A20 Pro chip, a redesigned Dynamic Island, upgraded cooling, longer battery life and the new Siri AI experience in iOS 27.
iPhone 18 Pro Australian price and release date
In Australia, the iPhone 18 Pro starts at A$2,099, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at A$2,299. Both begin with 256GB of storage, with 512GB, 1TB and 2TB configurations also available.
Pre-orders open at 10:00pm AEST on Saturday, September 12, with both phones going on sale on Friday, September 18. The four finishes are black, silver, glacier and a new burgundy.
The camera is the headline upgrade
The biggest change is Apple’s new 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture. Instead of relying entirely on computational photography to change the look of an image, the camera can physically adjust its aperture. Apple says it can widen to ƒ/1.48 for low-light shooting and narrow to ƒ/4 when greater depth of field is useful.
For enthusiasts and creators, new Pro controls add manual adjustment of aperture, shutter speed and white balance, along with a histogram for monitoring exposure. That moves the iPhone camera another step toward the controls photographers expect from dedicated cameras.
A20 Pro goes all-in on performance and AI
Inside is the A20 Pro, built on a 2nm process. Apple pairs a six-core CPU with a seven-core GPU and dual 16-core Neural Engines. Apple says GPU performance can be up to 40 percent faster than A19 Pro, while memory bandwidth has increased by 50 percent.
A next-generation vapour chamber is designed to sustain that performance for demanding games, video work and on-device AI rather than allowing the phone to quickly throttle under load.
Siri AI becomes part of the iPhone 18 Pro pitch
The hardware arrives alongside iOS 27 and Siri AI. Apple says the new Siri can use personal context, understand what is on screen and help users act on information across messages, email, photos and other content. Siri AI is rolling out in English, so availability and individual features may vary by region.
Smaller Dynamic Island, Wi-Fi 7 and Apple’s C2 modem
Apple has also redesigned the Dynamic Island so it takes up less space while being able to show as many as three Live Activities. Connectivity gets an overhaul through Apple’s N1 wireless chip with Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread, while the new C2 cellular modem is designed for improved reliability, faster uploads and lower energy use.
Battery life could matter more than the benchmarks
Apple is making unusually strong battery claims this generation. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is rated for up to 43 hours of video playback, and Apple describes the new Pro line as delivering a major leap in endurance. Faster wired charging is also supported.
The Tech Boom take
The iPhone Duo is Apple’s more dramatic announcement, but the iPhone 18 Pro may be the more important product commercially. Variable aperture is a meaningful camera change rather than another megapixel race, while A20 Pro, improved cooling and Apple’s own modem show how much of the iPhone experience Apple now wants to control itself.
At A$2,099, however, the Pro is firmly a premium purchase. For existing iPhone 17 Pro owners, the question will be whether the camera and AI changes justify upgrading after only a year. For people coming from an older Pro model, this is a much easier generation to pay attention to.
